Here is an update from Ron and Marion Pershing, before they leave on Sunday to return to Phoenix:
M I L E S T O N E S
Hard to believe it's been three and 1/2 months, but Marissa continues to reach milestones in her recovery, Grandpa & Grandma Pershing are returning to Phoenix this weekend, and Grandpa and Grandma Sipes are coming to help. Here are some of the achievements over the last 3 weeks.
WALKING: On June 7th, Marissa achieved a goal set May 21st...she walked the entire block, using a single point cane!!! 1000 FEET!!! Then her physical therapist began to work on her gait, with more emphasis on quality vs quantity. So recently she's been concentrating on raising her left leg more and bending her knee. The p.t. tested her left hamstring and advised that was the next area to work on in her daily exercises.
LEFT ARM: Marissa has been working hard each day doing exercises on her left arm, including using a contraption called a forearm skateboard. (See picture below.)
SO! WHO SAID THIS WAS FUN???????
Her left arm is beginning to show signs of brain directed movement, and she can now pull her forearm in to her chest and bend her forearm part way towards her mouth. This is another tremendous improvement in just 6 weeks, because when she came home from the hospital she could do none of this. God is faithful!! We are all so encouraged.
COMPRESSION STOCKINGS: Hooray! No more compression stockings!!!!! On Tuesday, June 19th, Marissa met for the first time the Kaiser physiatrist, Dr. Kim, who will be her primary doctor from now. (A physiatrist is an M.D. who has years of additional special training in rehab.) The first good news was that she didn't have to wear the compression stockings any more. Anyone who has had to wear them for a short period will appreciate what good news that was to someone who wore them for over 90 days. Now she can wear a regular long sock under the brace on her left leg, and it will be much more comfortable. (See picture below.)
The second bit of good news was that on July 9th Dr. Kim will give Marissa a botox injection in her left arm in 2 places: her pectoral muscle and forearm. Both Dr. Kim and the physical therapist have indicated this will help reduce the rigidity in her left arm and enable her to move it more freely. So there have been a lot of good things happening, and more to look forward to.
PHYSICAL THERAPY: Marissa has graduated from in-home physical therapy and will start outpatient therapy in 2 days. Her new physical therapist will focus on her walking, extending her left arm (moving it out away from her body) and building on the gains made thus far.
We say goodbye with these lines from a chorus sung in church this Sunday: STRENGTH WILL ARISE AS WE WAIT UPON THE LORD...WE WILL WAIT UPON THE LORD...WE WILL WAIT UPON THE LORD. (Based on these wonderful words from Isaiah 40: Those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.)

FORWARD! NO, BACKWARDS! SIDEWAYS? NO, IT REALLY IS FORWARD... seems to describe the last 2-1/2 weeks. Right after the last update Marissa was doing great! Walking longer distances every day...using a cane instead of a hemi walker...out of the wheelchair more. She even had enough strength and stamina to help Bethany pack for her 3 day Science Camp. Then, on Tuesday of last week she strained her lower back muscles, and we all learned how difficult that makes life. She had to cancel her Physical Therapy appointments, stopped walking at night, couldn't do her very important daily exercises, and couldn't even walk in the house because the pain made walking too difficult.
Marissa did make it to Jessica's pre-school graduation on Thursday (see picture). On Friday God led her to make an appointment with a wonderful chiropractor, Dr. Kaufmann in Brentwood, and by Sunday night she was well enough to go walking outside but only a short distance. Monday (2 days ago) it was back to her daily exercises and PT appointment. Yesterday she felt well enough to stand at the kitchen counter, get a mixing bowl, etc. and make cupcakes for Kayla's classmate to celebrate Kayla's 7th birthday. Way to go, Marissa! (Did you ever try to put frosting on cupcakes with one hand? Try it sometime.)
Yesterday afternoon she walked over 800 feet! A record (so far). So at the end of the past 2-12 weeks, we are reminded of what God told Joshua: 'Be strong, and of good courage.'

More "Marissa Milestones" ~ ~
Within hours of writing an update on the morning of May 12th (Saturday)
Marissa scored another "first". Her Kaiser physical therapist, "wonder worker" Armando, had her walking without her walker for the first time!!! She walked about 100 feet without a walker and without anyone supporting her! And that night she topped her previous record of 250 feet, walking outside, and did 500 feet!!! Now she regularly walks 600 FEET each evening (way to go, Marissa). The goal now is to walk an entire block.
Monday's session with Rachel, the occupational therapist, was brightened up by a surprise visit from two clowns participating in Gateway Christian School's Teacher Appreciation Day. (See picture below, Rachel is the one in the middle.) She gave Marissa some new exercises for her left arm, and after testing it reported that some brain-directed movement could now be detected in Marissa's left elbow.
Wednesday....Marissa went with Dave to AWANA's Award Ceremony for teachers/leaders. She decided to liven things up by getting up from her wheelchair to walk to the presenter Mrs. Curtis for her award. (Without her walker and only a strong guy on either side as "security".) It's been reported that Mrs. Curtis was almost speechless :-0 ...but only about a nano-second.
Thursday's session with a substitute PT from Kaiser...Marissa experienced for the first time in 69 days the pleasure of stepping across the threshold of her house, down one step, and down the sidewalk and driveway...using only her walker to aid her. She handled it beautifully.
Sunday she participated in a fundraising walk-a-thon/jog-a-thon for another mother at Gateway, and got a slight tan as Ron pushed her one mile around the track. (Grandma did one LAP, or about 1/4 mile before she quit!)
NOW...ARE YOU READY FOR THIS? Today Marissa walked again without a walker for an extended period and did various walking exercises in her PT session with Armando. (Sideways, backwards, bending over and picking up objects from the floor, without a walker.) As he was leaving, Armando urged her to discontinue using the wheelchair in the house, and to use her walker instead. He said, "As long as you're in that wheelchair, you body thinks you're sick." He said to reserve the use of the wheelchair for outside use when extended walking or standing is required. When Grandma came home from picking up the girls at school, Marissa was walking around with her walker AND SHE'S OUT OF HER WHEELCHAIR!!!!!!!!
The last 69 days seem like they have lasted forever and some days were very, very dark, but it really has been a short time. God has been so faithful all along the way.
P.S. Please continue to pray for recovery of Marissa's left arm. Rachel was here again today and showed Marissa how to do several weight-bearing exercises~~one while standing and one while sitting. When she started them, the fingers on her left hand were curled up and had to be forced into an extended position. After doing the exercises about 5-7 minutes, the fingers were completely loose. Weight-bearing seems to be the key to waking up the brain. So Marissa will begin focusing on these exercises from now on. As you can tell, she is one very busy lady!
WE ARE PRESSING ON!!!!!!!!!! We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
On Monday May 14 a couple of Gateway clowns visited Marissa and interrupted her therapy session. While it was possibly poor timing, everyone got to clown around for a few minutes.

May 12, 2007 a.m.
PRAISE REPORT: SHE'S ON THE MOVE!!!!!
May 9th was another day of great joy, and it's been ever increasing joy since then. On Weds., May 9, Dave and Marissa and family attended the Awards Ceremony for AWANAS at their church. Awanas is child-centered Bible-teaching and memorization and related activities for kids that meets every Weds. night from Sept. to May. Marissa was a leader-teacher until she was laid low by a stroke on March 9th. Two months later, Marissa was standing very tall, even though in a wheelchair, as she joined other leaders and children in celebrating achievements and participation over the past 9 months.
(You can tell by the pictures below what a great evening it was for Marissa and all concerned as they joined the little ones in singing praise songs to Jesus....some songs with very lively hand gestures! )
That morning Marissa had gone for a short walk (with David and Ron) for the first time on the sidewalk outside of their house. (We finally figured out the sidewalk was a great practice facility, wide enough to accommodate two people and a walker, and much more fun than walking in narrower hallways in the house.) Now, here's the tally on her walking activities since then:

Dave and Ron walk along with her, not really holding her up, but simply having their hand lightly on the gait belt she wears (as a safety precaution). Marion follows along with the wheelchair for when Marissa finally gets tired....so she is forcing all of us to get our exercise too! Then Marion becomes the official 'measurer of distance' while the entire Sipes family, friends and neighbors all gather around Marissa to chat and laugh, and just enjoy being with her.
Marissa has a special walker she uses (called a hemi walker) that is a one-sided walker. She also wears a special rigid plastic 'brace' on her left leg that aid in her movement. The brace is a 2-piece brace that was created from a plaster cast the Rehab Center made of her foot and leg. One section wraps around the bottom of her foot and heel, and extends up the lower part of her leg. The second part covers the top of her foot and up her shin. They are held in place by several velcro straps. It is really quite ingenious. Marissa is becoming more proficient on putting it on by herself.
Riss's PT therapist at the Rehab Center told her, 'The more you do, the more you can do' so she is sure putting that counsel into action. It is so exciting to see the strength come back in her left leg, and to see God at work doing great and mighty things. I couldn't help but be teary-eyed as I watched Marissa on the platform at AWANAS singing with the children 'every step that I take, I take in You'. She is doing that, literally. We continue to be grateful to God, for every day with her is a gift from Him.

As many of you know, Marissa came home Wednesday. Wednesday after getting home, Marissa went with Dave to pick up the girls. Later they all went to Bethany's soccer game.
On Friday she went to the kids school's Roam-A-Thon and Fun Fair. When Bethany jogged around the track, Dave and Marissa went as well. The happiness of being home can be seen on her face.
Marissa is continuing her therapy at home, walking, standing, etc.
Thank you to all who have prayed (and continue to pray) for Marissa and the family.
April 30, 2007
Marissa spent the weekend at home therapy Saturday and Sunday. It was a nice, restful weekend. Just what the doctor ordered.
Accomplishments: While sitting, Marissa was able to lift her weak left leg and cross it over her right leg. She was able to lift herself out of her wheelchair and pull herself to a standing position and stood for a few minutes at the kitchen counter. While she only did this a couple times, this is still worth great Praise! Marissa's left arm still is unresponsive.
Thank you for your continuing prayers for Marissa. Wednesday will be homecoming day, the whole family is excited about it. Ron and Marion have rented an apartment in Antioch to stay in town for a couple more months during this transision period. Dave will be taking a few days off in order to stay home with Marissa.
Marissa still will need much rest, but low-key visits for a few minutes will be ok. A couple of people at a time, just like in the hospital. Please call ahead of time! This is very important to make sure she is available, awake, dressed, etc.
This past 7 weeks has been life changing for the Sipes family, It's hard to believe it's only been 7 weeks. I'm sure its felt more like years to Dave, the girls and the family. The Lord has been good to allow Marissa to stay with us and give her the healing and recovery she has. The doctors and nurses and all the other support staff have been wonderful. While this is a great turning point, the mountain is still steep. Please keep Marissa and the whole family in your prayers for this journey. If you want to continue these emails in your Inbox, although they may be less frequent, we will continue to keep you updated. This is an update from Ron and Marion, to be passed on to all the friends and family who couldn't be there when Marissa returned home for the first time in 44 days ~
The smile says it all!!! It was a wonderful 28 hours that passed all too quickly. Everyone here rested VERY WELL, knowing that Marissa was enjoying sleeping in her own bed. The 'overnight pass' was granted by Kaiser-Permanente to see how well she would fare...sort of a dress rehearsal. As far as we're concerned, it was another milestone in what has been quite a journey. We thank God with all our hearts for His mercy and His faithfulness.
'Thank you, thank you, thank you' is inadequate an expression for all who have prayed, made meals for the family, mowed the lawn and put out the trash, sent notes and cards, visited Dave and Marissa with encouragement, lent financial support, and been faithful friends through it all. Your outpouring of love has been amazing.

Although tired on Monday, Marissa's weekend home therapy was just what she needed. Marissa arrived at home about 2:00 Saturday afternoon, visited with her family for about an hour and then took a short rest. The family ate pot roast for dinner and had a chocolate "Welcome Home Mommy" cake for dessert.
It was a calm and quiet visit. The therapy was intended to help Marissa with her independence and give Dave, Ron & Marion a chance to work out the training they went through to assist Marissa when needed. Marissa was able to sleep in her own bed. Can you just imagine what that felt like? Dave said that Marissa slept real good.
Marissa went back to Kaiser Sunday evening. Dave got her in just before "lights out" and the warden didn't know she was missing. Soon after everyone settled in, Marissa was out like a light.
The Marissa pizza night at Aladinos was a wild and crazy success. The place was packed and looked like a busy, busy Friday night. Thanks to everyone that was able to make this a terrific fellowship and successful fundraiser. Thanks to the Antioch Aladinos for hosting this event.

Thank you for all your prayers and kind words for Marissa and the whole family. In your prayers, please remember to thank the Lord for all that He has done for Marissa in these last 6 weeks. As you can tell from the tone of these notes and Dave's notes, the immediate threat is over and therapy is going good. In a few weeks Marissa will be able to come home. While this won't be easy, at least she will be able to be with her family and friends. The next year or two will be a lot of work.
"Pray without ceasing." 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Frequently we remember to pray when things are falling apart in our lives. We need to remember that our Lord hears us All The Time. He hears us when we wake up, when we are driving to work or school and when we go to bed. We need to remember to continually pray for not only the bad times but also the good times. We need to praise Him for all the things that go good in every day. Whether its for safe travel or a good dinner or friends that give good hugs. Whether you are sitting, standing, driving or on your knees, you can pray. Thank you for your continuing prayers, He hears them.
On to Marissa growth:
Marissa's speech is soft, but good. There doesn't appear to be any paralysis in her face. Her left leg is strengthening, but still has a long way to go. The right leg works just fine and she relies on it a lot, especially while in her wheelchair moving about at the hospital. Her left arm isn't working yet. The therapists are still trying different techniques to get it to respond, attempting to activate another part of her brain to control the muscles. Marissa's right arm can hug her little girls very, very well as well as keep Dave under control. She still needs help to get out of bed or a chair, but is working to become more independent. She still has assistance to walk, she can put some pressure on her leg but needs help moving it forward. Ron, her dad, says that he nudges it forward and they both get it going.

Happy Saturday. Praise the Lord! Today was a beautiful spring day, especially for a garage sale. Thanks to everyone that came by and supported the effort. We had a huge turnout. When the crowds finally slowed down to a crawl, it was time to pack up. THEN it started a light sprinkling of rain. God is good.
Here are a couple of pictures, include a work of art that didn't sell but created some smiles and laughter. (Where else could you have bought a work of art for $3?)
The neighbors were pretty happy when the work of art went away.
4/20:
Well it was Dave's turn for training today!!! ... hmmm, with
that thought, we think that the staff and Marissa gave up before the day
started. Anyway it all went well, no broken bones, toes, dropped
wife, or unnecessary bleeding. The morning training went especially
well until approximately 11:30. That is when Barb, Beth, and Annette
showed up to visit with Marissa. She was able to keep to the routines
and exercises despite the hen pecking on her husband. She had a great
lunch and with some dear close friends and laughed and smiled the entire
time. Marissa and Dave worked hard at all the transfers and lifts and
rotations for the home visit. Marissa had a very good dinner and is
excited to go home for the weekend. (no drop-in visitors please, this is part of her therapy. Thanks.) As Dave left this evening, Marissa
was still chuckling from the lunchtime visit.

Marissa is part of a dangerous group of girls (eh, women) that get into trouble. This dangerous group of girls, or D-gog, visited Marissa today. Here is one of the stories that had to be told.
"To celebrate Beth's birthday the ladies usually go out for breakfast, but since Marissa couldn't come with us, Annette suggested we take it to her. It was a great idea. Due to Marissa's busy physical therapy schedule, we decided to do lunch. Armed with delicious Panera Bread sandwiches, we got there early enough to observe the last part of her therapy session. Dave was there being certified (of course, we all agreed he already was certifiable!) Dave's years as a Marine must still be fresh in his brain (amazing for his age!), for he was able to give out orders on how many reps to do. Imagine our delighted surprise as we watched our dear friend Marissa give him a good chop. She is also quite the karate kicker--when the subject of how much Dave wanted to learn how to give shots came up. We of course behaved ourselves and offered only quiet encouragement as she finished up. It was so good to see Marissa & Dave working together as a team, laughing at our corny jokes, just like old times and we are looking forward to many more times in the near future."

4/19:
Ron is up with Marissa today to learn the training techniques.
Before Marissa can come home all the care givers need to be trained on
transfer techniques, medications, and care. Early this morning, Marissa
called to wish Jessica a Happy Birthday. Jessica is very excited today
and Marissa is wishing she can be there. I brought Jessica snd Kayla
to see Marissa today after school. THer were happy faces and smiles all
around, and the girls were a hit with the PT staff. Jessi and Kayla
were the designated pillow case replenishment team; while Grandpa and
Dave were dropping Marissa off curbs and stairs.

I talked with Dave a few minutes last night. Marissa is doing well. Dave talked of an interesting therapy that Marissa describes as "torture". In order to get her leg to respond more, they place her left foot in freezing ice water to allow her foot/leg muscles/nerves to sense the icy condition and jerk back. This is apparently "not fun" and is works (a little). I think Dave said that she calls it her torture therapy. They had a laugh about it as we talked.
This weekend Marissa will be going through some therapy to train her to be more independant at home. She won't be available for visitors. If you want to visit Marissa, go during the week.

Marissa had a very interesting day. Berta, one of Marissa's physical
therapists, has been using a new technique to help the left foot and leg
perform a walking motion. ICE - very cold ICE, they place Marissa's
left foot, ankle, and calf in a bucket of VERY COLD ICE water to casue a
reaction - and it did. Marissa calls it TORTURE. This process causes
the foot to pull up and simulate the walking motion. Well, they never
said she was going to enjoy the therapy!!

Marissa has been doing great. Marion was up with her all day learning
diffferent techniques to assist her when she comes home. Marion was
very impressed with Marissa's motoring around in her wheelchair. We
think she is practicing for the "Vallejo 500"! She is impressing the
staff with her improvements so much that they are using her as training
example for new interns and patients. The staff feel that she will
improve greatly once she is at home; except that Dave may be a
hinderance.

(No, there weren't any updates on Friday or Saturday, sorry. Busy, busy, busy.)
We went to see Marissa on Saturday with Barb and her son Drake. Barb made Marissa a beautiful quilt and gave it to her. We all had a nice visit talking and laughing. Earlier on Saturday Marissa said the Gann Clan came to visit and brought her Chinese Food. She said it was very good. Friday night Dave went out to a local Black Angus and brought Marissa back a steak and potato dinner.
Marissa is going about 60 feet in her therapy walks. She still needs assistance. There is a little improvement in her leg as she walks but still no improvement in her left arm. Her speech is good. When she smiles or laughs, it fills her whole face. It's so great to see her smile.
Marissa has quiet neighbors with only a small pfft here and there. Much better than the previous hacking room. She gets good needed rest. She spends much of her time with either the therapist, visitors, watching sports favorites or napping when she doesn't have Dave keeping her awake with his antics.
May 2nd is the current IGH date (I'm Going Home!) Much needs done in her progress to prepare her for this. Thanks everyone for your prayers, God hears them and has done miracles with Marissa in the last 5 weeks since she entered the ICU.
If you are interested in getting rid of some stuff and bringing it to the garage sale, don't forget to save April 21st. Jeff plans on setting up around 6:00 am. Apparently Ron and Marion are garage sale aficionados and they have been helping Jeff and I with tips and hints on a successful event. Give Jeff or I a ring or email if you have any questions. The proceeds will be going to the Marissa Medical expenses account at WaMu.

Today Marissa had a good day. She was happy and good spirits. She talked on the phone with her Ron (dad), Marion (mom) and the kids and laughed and joked with them. In Occupational Therapy she made another pizza. I'm not sure who ate this one. Today she wore her shoulder support/harness. This keeps her shoulder up, instead of hanging. Pray that her shoulder, arm & hand respond to therapy and exercises so that she doesn't need this support and she can make pizza with both hands.
This evening while Dave visited Marissa they talked and then enjoyed a favorite show of Marissa's, Perry Mason. Dave was apparently caught falling asleep while laying on Marissa's bed. (I don't know where Marissa was.)
Tomorrow morning Dave is going to go to the hospital to get Marissa's official progress report from the doctor. This report will help the doctors determine when Marissa can leave the hospital. Please pray for a great report and continued strength.
Some folks say this didn't get this: The Sipes' neighbors, the Ganns and Migays are joining in the Pulte neighborhood garage sale on April 21. We are also going to add some stuff to the driveway. The proceeds will benefit the Marissa Sipes Benevolence Account at Washington Mutual. If you have some stuff that you would like to bring over on that Saturday morning, feel free to join us. We do ask that if your bobbles and knick-knacks don't sell that you are able to take them home as we won't have any place to store them. (Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.)

Tuesday:
When we (me and my Grandpa) got their, she was about done with her PT(Physical Therapy) before lunch. After lunch, she had another PT class, this one showing her how she would do certain things after she got home, like how to go to the bathroom, take a shower/bath, etc. Then she had her speech therapy. After that, she had Occupational Therapy. In OT she made PIZZA (dough)!!! Then we all played....VOLLEYBALL!!!!!!! Then we had to leave.
Wednesday: When we (me, Kayla, Jessie, Grandpa, and Grandma) went today, my mom had 30 to 45 minutes of her PT before lunch left. Today at her PT class after lunch, she walked 40 ft. (with help). Then she had Speech Therapy. After that, she finished her pizza she had started making the day before. Then we had to leave.
I forgot to mentain this but she was very jokey
and happy
both days.

Marissa appears in good spirits tonight. She had home made enchiladas, she said they were very tasty. Yesterday and today Marissa and Bethany made pizza in Occupational Therapy and Dave had some of it tonight.
Today Marissa took two different 40 foot walks. When I asked her if it was on her own or with assistance, she replied, "Both!".
Both Dave and Marissa mentioned that they have moved up her release date near the beginning of May. Keep going Marissa!
Please continue to pray for Marissa's left arm and continued strength and response in her left leg. God is hearing these prayers and Marissa is feeling your love.
P.S. The Sipes' neighbors, the Ganns and Migays are joining in the Pulte neighborhood garage sale on April 21. We are also going to add some stuff to the driveway. During the 4:30 therapy session, Marissa walked 40 feet (with assistance)! She is able to press down on her left side to step her good right foot. The therapist helps her advance the left leg to push it forward.

Hope you had a great Easter.
Yesterday, Sunday, Marissa had a good day and got to see her girls. It was a good visit. There is no therapy on Sundays so she just got to hang out and watch the Suns and LA Lakers game. The hospital staff moved Marissa to another room. No more coughing and hacking. (Marissa's doctor wanted her with his other patients to keep his rounds together.) Later the girls (and Dave) got to go up to Petaluma for an overnight camping trip.
Today is a GREAT day. About 3:00 pm, Dave called and said that God has answered everyones prayers. Marissa moved her left leg during therapy. She was able to push down on it while in her gait (walking) therapy. Needless to say, everyone was pretty excited about it. The therapists was commenting about Marissa's remarkable progress.
Continued prayers for strength and patience.
Also, prayers for Marissa's brother-in-Christ, Lee Prevost. Lee is in surgery (3-way bypass) at the time of this writing. The surgery started about 4:00 and will go until about 7:00 pm.
Sat 4/7/07:
Ron and Marion went to see Marissa earlier today. When they got to
the hospital, they found that she was in another room. Apparently, she
was moved to another room this morning; they like to keep the patients
of the same physicians on the same wing of the floor. Well, that is the
story that they told Marissa, but Dave's name was mentioned by the
staff, hmmmm? Something about where am I going? Or was it Dale?
Anyway Saturday is group therapy day; Ron and Marion went to class
with Marissa and found the information very valuable and useful for when
she returns home. They learned and assisted with exercises to perform
and can see the remarkable change and progress that Riss is making.
Dave and the girls came up late in the afternoon and stayed through
till dinner. They all enjoyed the Easter weekend showing of "The Sound
of Music". How do you solve a problem like _____?
It was a good visit with momma and the girls want to come back as
often as they can. They like climbing in bed with her and playing with
the cool tray table to goes up and down and slides in and out. Did I
mention the Hackers? The girls ask why they cough and spit so much?
The innocence of children.
Marissa was strong enough to read through all the cards that people
have sent. She read all of them and was very touched. She is very
appreciative and thankful of all the blessings that everyone has
bestowed to us.

We just got off the phone with Dave, he says Marissa is doing great (Dave's word was "jovial"). She had a good day in therapy, and a good visit with Dave. They spent a bit of time laughing, sharing and having fun with the nurses. A highlight of the day was she was able to eat some Lumpia brought in from home. Dave, Ron and Marion have been bringing in food that families have been bringing to the house and the Lumpia was quite a hit. She had some spaghetti a few days ago that hit the spot too. This evening Marissa read some of the MySipes.com website on her own progress as well as the Guestbook updates.

Marissa had a better day Thursday. Some of the effects of the medicine changes have gone away and Marissa was back. She was more light hearted and happier. The empty bed in her 4 bed ward is now occupied. She now has 3 other women in the room that hack and cough all night. Its like an orchestra. She has a soprano and a bass coughing section. Anyone for some supreme throat clearing?
Marissa's hospital exit date has been updated to May 8th. She is doing great in recovery. The doctors met Dave so they moved the date further back so she has a better chance of dealing with not only three children but also the husband child. Dave agreed.
Lift God's name on high. He is risen.

An update from Dave from Wednesday April 4.
Ron, Marion, and Jessica went to see Marissa this morning. The doctors
have been changing some of Marissa's meds so she has been to dizzy to go
to her PT sessions yesterday afternoon and this morning. They spent
time with her and then ate lunch together. Jessica played with mommy
and chatted quite a bit (her favorite pastime - that is Jessie's).
Marissa was able to go to her afternoon therapy sessions, but was very
tired because the nurses like to wake her up at 0300 am to give her
pills to make her sleep - (do you see something wrong here)? The result
is that she cannot fall back asleep - hmmm? Actually it was the
medicine that has been completed as a treatment, so she should not be
awoken at 0300 am anymore. Consequently, she was very tired this
evening and after the 6:30 - 7:30 pm class she went back to her room and
crashed.

Tuesday was a more difficult day for Marissa. Marissa was prescribed a muscle relaxant and it relaxed her too much. She was able to do her morning therapy, but not the other two afternoon therapys. She was considerably more sleepy and not as alert.
Dave has taken his laptop to the hospital a couple times and within the last couple days Marissa has looked at your Guestbook entries. Your heartfelt messages of love are appreciated.
We continue to pray for God's power would shine on Marissa and give her strength, especially that her brain will reconnect with her left arm and leg.
Dave returned to work yesterday and plans to keep a work schedule. Please pray for Dave's super long days of work and then travel to the hospital in the evenings that he has a safe travel and remains alert while driving.
Please continue to pray for the kids in their innocence through this. This is a very confusing time for the children. Praise God that both Dave and Marissa's parents have been able to be released from their everyday life and can help with the family.

The road to recovery.
As part of Marissa's recovery, yesterday (Monday) she was moved to a "regular" diet. She is no longer on soft solid foods. Marissa continues to go through her therapy. She still needs to gain strength in her left leg and arm. The program they are going through is to help Marissa gain independance so she can go home.
Thank you for your continuing prayers. Please pray for Marissa's strength, stamina and spirit.

Some thoughts about seeing her today...YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was 'our Marissa :) :) :)
I was going to say 'our old Marissa'..but she's not old, and boy did she look great!!!
She asked questions about my family, my son's broken arm, school, the auction, nachos, camping in August...the silly mundane things of life, but the totally awesome thing was that she was talking just like normal Marissa...and she joked in her normal way, not wanting the attention on her.
Her eyes were bright and did a good job of tracking, her face interested & expressive, her personality was shining through...praise God!
One of the things that impressed me was that she asked to be taken to the bathroom, when Marion asked if she meant the bedpan, Marissa said no, that the Dr wanted her to not use that, but to get up...that shows how determined she is to do what is going to be required of her to get better.
She was very interested in the Suns basketball game that was on when I got there and even evaluated some of plays.
It was neat to see how comfortable & compassionate all their girls were w/her...(while playing a game of Uno!)
Our God is so faithful, to think how far she has come in a little over 3 weeks...even in just the last week, we will keep praying!

PT 3 times a day is working. Marissa walked about 6 feet today. She supported herself on her good right leg and the therapist moved her left leg with Marissa concentrating on doing it herself. Then she would move her right leg by herself. After about the 6 foot marathon, it was time to rest. Continued prayers to get this leg moving by itself.
This Sunday Marissa doesn't have any PT and visitors are welcome to keep the day "busy". The room is shared with other patients so please keep just a couple visitors at a time. I hear there is a fish and chips place nearby, maybe it's a good place to catch some lunch.

Today Marissa spent another typical day at the spa. Her therapist continues to send Marissa through the PT and today also went through some speech therapy and long term and short term memory challenges. She passed with flying colors. Her therapist also had Marissa write a paragraph about how she and Dave met. Her handwritting was great and she probably remembers more than Dave does. (She usually does.)
Ron and Marion (dad and mom) got to spend the day with Marissa while Dave spent some time with the girls.
If you like oatmeal for breakfast and tuna pasta, cheese sticks and apple juice for lunch, go to the Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo. Apparently they have a lot of it.

Marissa had her first day of PT, physical therapy, today. They went through full-range-of-motion exercises and standing. Marissa was stood up for the first time today since March 9th. She was a little light-headed but otherwise ok. Praise God!
Her PT keeps kept her pretty busy and exhausted her. They plan on Monday through Saturday PT. Just as the Lord rested on the seventh day, Marissa will rest as well. Dave said that visitors are welcome on Sundays. Please recognize that she is in a 4 bed ward and the need to respect quiet and with limited folks in the room at any one time.
Dave thanks you all for your continued prayers. Please pray for a responsive left leg and arm.
Dave says that the plan at this time is that Marissa might be able to leave Kaiser mid-April. She will need 24 hour care but at least she'll be home!

Marissa was moved from Sacramento to Vallejo Rehab. Most of the day was spent with transportation, Admitting stuff, paperwork, bed, and fitting for a wheel chair. She is in a room with 3 other beds, two are occupied. All this stuff took time and she took naps to rest.
Sometime during the integration she was challenged with questions/testing concerning mental awareness like, what is today and what date is it. She did great while Dave was somewhat confused what day it was. She did some math questions and other basic questions to collect a baseline.
She spent some time visiting with Dave and waited/napped. Please pray for her left leg and arm to respond and control and grow strong. Please pray for body, mind and spirit to stay healthy and strong, these will be long and tiring days ahead.

Praise the Lord!
Monday, good news all day. First, Marissa has been very alert today. She ate all her breakfast, french toast and juice. She sat up for a good hour in the cardiac chair.
Dr. Pena came in and told Dave that she will be transfered to Vallejo Kaiser Rehabilitation Hospital tomorrow at 9am. She had her NG tube removed (feeding tubing in her nose to her stomach), and she had her PICC line removed (like an IV tube). She ate her entire lunch, meatloaf - at least Dave thinks it was meatloaf. "It is easier to eat and swallow without a tube in your throat."
She took a couple of naps and they are just prepping for tomorrows move.
Dave says that the nurses in the Sacramento hospital warned him that the schedule in the rehab hospital will be very busy. Please, no drop-in visitors. Once Dave learns the schedule, he can arrange visiting times.

Marissa continues to improve in her speech and increased "awake" time. This weekend she was able to spend time with her girls both Saturday and Sunday. Marissa has officially expressed her distaste for hospital food. Dave took in some "real food" offered by a generous family helping feed the girls including some chicken and cheesy rice.
Please continue prayer for healing Marissa's left side for recovery and strength.
If you would like to go visit Marissa please contact Beth. Because of several factors (therapy, not too many people there at once, time with just the Sipes family, etc.) Dave would like to schedule when people are wanting to come up.

Marissa sat up again today and was placed in a mobile/cardiac chair. She did not like it!! She endured the session (with Dave) and worked on physical therapy. Dave stolled her around the hospital on the chair and sat outside for awhile.
Marissa ate pancakes for breakfast, she does not care for the hospital food, especially the eggs! Dave thought they we ok, then again he says he likes MRE's!
Marissa had some very important vistors today, her girls. They came to see momma. Marissa was tired, but let them climb up on the bed with her and hold them.
Marissa had Salsbury steak for lunch and fish with noodles and carrots for dinner. She seemed a little restless but is improving greatly. Praise God.
Hopefully they will transfer Marissa to Vallejo next week for rehab therapy.

Dave called tonight and said Marissa continues to improve. Praise God! Marissa sat up in the cardiac chair again today. She is also working with a therapist. When she is awake, she is very awake with both eyes open.
The Sipes girls are planning on going up and seeing their mom again Saturday for a short visit.
For breakfast one of the things she ate was hashbrowns. MMMMM. Lunch was spaghetti with butterscotch pudding. (Not mixed together I assume.) The food must taste good!
Dave got Marissa a whistle to blow so she can wake him up if she needs him. (I'm sure he'll be sorry about that.) Marissa's internal clock tells her to wake up at night and sleep during the day. Dave's internal clock is opposite.
On another front, Dave's parents (up from AZ to watch the kids for the past week) are going home and then will fly out to IN to see their daughter Susan. She is in the hospital. Please pray for Susan and that God will also care for her and this emergency. Please pray for Grandpa and Grandma Sipes for their travels home to AZ and flight to IN.

Boy, Marissa is determined to get better. Today Marissa sat up with help but without a chair, she was supported. She is making great progress. She passed her Swallow test and is able to eat regular food! You can't imagine how Dave sounded when he told us that.
She drank ice water and chewed ice, she had apple sauce, jello, and dry crackers.
For dinner, Marissa ate chicken with gravy, noodles, carrots and beans, she had apple sauce for desert. Hospital food. I bet it was great!
While she still sleeps a lot, allowing the damaged areas to heal, her progress is showing the doctors and nurses the power of prayer!
Dave has been getting updates from the Guestbook on mysipes.com and I believe he said he is sharing them with Marissa when he can. Dave has been greatly encouraged by your cards, the kids posters, and most of all the coast to coast prayer chain. Thank you all for for your support.

We have good news and we have great news about Marissa!
The good news: Marissa asked her husband Dave to bring their girls up to see her today. The girls were able to see their mom for the first time. The visit went well. The girls were all able to spend time with mommy AND daddy. If you see the girls please let them talk to you about seeing their mom if they want to. Please do not mention the girls visiting their Mom. They will talk about it when they are ready.
Now the great news: The doctor said Marissa is improving remarkably. This evening Marissa was moved out of ICU and into a private room. Praise God! Please remember no drop-in visitors are allowed.... doctor's orders. Please clear all visitors through Dale or Beth (as requested by Dave). Marissa is still sleepy and the rest that she is getting is a big part of the healing process. Although the doctors are saying she is making remarkable progress, she is still within the danger window of vasospasms. Thank you for being patient to visit her.

Marissa continues to stay awake a little more each day. Praise God.
Marissa also has some spunk in her, yesterday she wanted help switching positions in bed. She pushed her call button for the nurse. The nurse did not come for awhile so Marissa disconnected a monitor, and zoom, the nurse came right in. This is starting to sound like the Marissa we know!
Thank you for your continued prayers. Please pray for the affected portion of her brain to heal and Marissa's left arm and leg to respond and strengthen.

Dave called late last night and gave us an update.
Marissa was more awake yesterday (Monday). Dave and Marissa watched an hour long t.v. show they like (at least most of it).
Today (Tuesday) Dave and Kayla are going on a field trip with Kayla's class. Later this afternoon or early evening Dave will go back to the hospital and spend a couple days there. He wants to be sure to talk to all the doctors.
One of the doctors talked to Dave yesterday and said Marissa was making "remarkable progress".
Please continue to pray for Marissa for strength on her left side and continued rest and healing. Please continue to pray for Dave for the drive back-and-forth. Please pray for family for Spiritual strength in this great challenge and traveling mercy as they go back-and-forth from the hospital.
Dave mentioned that they are overwhelmed with the prayer support. They are so thankful for you and your love. Not only are there about six different churches in the local area that are praying for Marissa, there are also churches in AZ, CO, OK and IN as well. The power of prayer and your love for the Sipes is awesome. Dave thanks you.

Marissa was fairly awake this morning for a few hours. By the evening she was sleepy.
This morning she woke Dave up to tell him that it was time to get up so he could be home in time to take the girls to church. When the nurses ask her what the month and year are, she tells them. They ask her what is her name and she tells them.
Please continue to pray for Marissa's improvement and rest. Please continue to pray for the family as travel to visit her. Praise God that she has (had) a couple Christian nurses who have prayed with her. She has been well looked after and taken care of.
Thank you for all your prayers. The outpouring of love and support is felt and appreciated.

Praise God for Marissa's fantastic progress. This morning, very early, about 3:00 AM, Marissa was apparently bored and turned on the TV and flipped through the channels and found there was nothing to watch. Dave turned on some Christian music and she calmed down and went back to sleep.
Today Marissa was set up in bed for a while and is more aware. Each day she is getting better. She watched a little basketball on TV and Indiana wasn't doing very well. She is moving her right toes and foot a little which is great news.
While she still isn't out of the woods and is still in ICU, she is progressing each day. Thanks for the prayers, cards, emails, and financial help.
Marissa's dad and mom are working to set up a Benevolence Account with Washington Mutual. This account, in addition to the WaMu Gift Cards will tremendously help with longer term support for convalescence and physical therapy needs. We'll send out info once it is set up.
Some friends from PeopleSoft family in the Pleasanton area are setting up a "Help Marissa Dinner" at the Hop Yard in San Ramon. We'll send info out and see if we can fill the joint!

Marissa had a restful night. She whispered Dave's name a couple times during the evening and early morning. Late Friday morning Marissa was sat up on in a special chair (called a Cardiac Chair) for about 45 minutes. Praise God that the doctors feel that she is ready for this step. Marissa had a quiet day with Dave. Today she moved her right foot a little. At 2:40 pm, she remembered that Kayla needed picked up from school in a few minutes.
Please continue to keep Marissa's strength and calm in your prayers. Please keep Dave's strength and calm in your prayers. The doctors still have Marissa under their intensive watchful eyes for at least another week. Please continue to pray the vasospasms don't occur.
Each day is a gift of the Lord. Take a moment to thank God for His saving grace and His give to us. Take a moment to turn to your loved ones and remind them they are also a gift. Love them. Hug them. Cherish them.

Today Marissa spent most of the day sleeping, doctor's orders.
She woke up for a few moments every-so-often and took time look at the
photos taped to the ceiling placed by a friend. She spoke a few words and
continues to slowly progress. She continues to tell the nurses what
she wants (to be moved, water, etc.) by hand signs and a few softly spoken words.
This afternoon Marissa went through another
test to look at the progress.

This morning Marissa opened her eyes and tried to focus. Praise God!
A friend said that Marissa was able to very softly (whisper), "I'm O.K." when asked if she wanted something. Praise God!
Dave asked for you continued prayer for the next 14 plus days. He asked to please pray that the Vasospasm does not occur.
Dave and family thank everyone for their prayer, kind words, and love during this difficult time. I know they feel very loved.
Many want to help and we will be contacting you with some ways you can help some time soon. Right now they want to thank you and ask for prayers for Marissa, the doctors and the family.
If you need to talk to Dave, at least for now, please call us at home and we will give him messages and phone numbers. As you can imagine this is a busy time for him. Also you can send a card or note to the family at their house or our house. The Gateway School offices have envelopes there for things and I check it twice a day. We will be sure they get them. Please do not send flowers or cards or calls to the hospital. Marissa can not have flowers or calls now.
The girls are doing well. They are enjoying having Grandma and Grandpa here with them. Next week Dave's parents will be here and Marissa's parents will be going home to Ariz. for a little while. Please also pray for the family as they travel.

Today they removed Marissa's tubes from her mouth and wrist restraints (praise God!). She now has a feeding tube in her nose. They continue to monitor her closely. She is communicating with us by signs. She also is able to stick her tongue out at us if she doesn't like something and give us thumbs-up if she wants something. Marissa tosses the llama stuffed animal at Dave from some conversation in the room, as well at hits him from something he said. Go Marissa!
Marissa's parents ask for prayer for Marissa's fever to go away. We were told it is normal for people with this to have a fever but the doctors are checking to be sure the fever is not caused by another reason (like infection).
Also, please pray for comfort, peace and rest for Marissa so that another aneurysm will not happen. The next 14 days she is going to be watched very carefully. Please pray for the doctor's wisdom.
Several have asked about going to visit Marissa. At this time the family is requesting NO drop in visitors. Now is when she needs quiet and rest. This is a private time for her and her family. Thank you for understanding.
Thank you for all who have volunteered to help!! We will be in contact with you when we hear the family needs something. Grandparents call and let me know if there is something they need.

Dave takes kids to church with grandparents. Later the kids go over to another friend?s house to go swimming.
Marissa opens eyes in morning and sticks out her tongue teasing us. She also wins a few rounds of thumb wrestling.

Golden Hills pastor visited Marissa and Dave.
Three highly specialized neurosurgeons visit at various times to determine severity of the aneurysm and check progress.
Marissa responds to some commands. She briefly and slightly opens her eyes. Give "thumbs up", provides one and two fingers when asked. No hand or finger movement on left arm other than pressing shoulder and arm down.
A friend stayed the night with Dave watching Marissa while Dave gets some much needed sleep.
Friday, March 9, 2007, about 4:30 p.m.
Marissa collapsed; Bethany called 911 and called Dave. Ambulance took Marissa to Sutter in Antioch, stabilized her and helicopter to Kaiser in northern Sacramento to the ICU.
An angiogram was conducted to determine location of an aneurysm.
Marissa?s parents arrive about 1:00 am on Saturday morning to Brentwood.
A friend went with Dave to Sacramento to stay with him overnight.
